Grinling Gibbons was arguably the greatest carver in British history and described as the ‘painter in wood.’ His carvings were so realistic that they fooled the eye: When Sir Horace Walpole wore the ‘Venetian lace’ cravat that Gibbons had carved for him in limewood (c. 1690), Walpole’s guests thought it was the real thing.
2021 marks the tercentenary of Gibbons’s death and in this talk Ada de Wit, Curator of Works of Art and Sculpture at the Wallace Collection in London will focus on his work in country houses and royal palaces.
In buildings such as Petworth House, Ramsbury Manor, St Paul’s Cathedral, Hampton Court and Windsor Castle Gibbon’s craftsmanship and exuberant style established him as one of the greatest loop artists of the English Baroque.
Ticketholders will be able to see a recording of the talk for 7 days after the event.
