The National Gallery have just opened the first ever exhibition in the UK on this remarkable female artist. Artemisia battled against all odds to become a highly successful artist in her own time, a true feat for a young woman and was the first female to be accepted in to the in Florence Academy. Her paintings are wonderfully dramatic, with striking compositions and a real depth of colour. She was an excellent narrator and produced many Biblical and mythological scenes which centered on a strong female protagonist, themes of which still resonate today. Artemisia has unjustly remained in the shadows of art history and finally her true skill and importance will be on display.
We are delighted that the lecture will be given by AHA Alumni Lucy Chiswell, The Dorset Curatorial Fellow (European Paintings, 1600-1800) at The National Gallery who has been assisting with the exhibition. Lucy will give us an in-depth understanding of this significant artist, discussing her life and works in detail. She will also shed some light on the trials and tribulations of putting together such a seminal exhibition.
