Love and Marriage in the Renaissance
by Nicholas Ross
21st October 6pm
Nick will look at the themes of love and marriage in the Renaissance from the viewpoint of anthropology. He will discuss how the Church, the law and public opinion influenced relationships in 15th and 16th century Florence and how this both affected and was reflected in art of the period. The lecture will encompass far ranging ideas such as Sumptuary Laws and Mythology as well as the ever cheerful Savonarola. We will see a variety of art including Van Eyck, Raphael, Bronzino, Botticelli and possibly Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights.
