What can art teach us about overcoming adversity? Annabel and Helena will explore these questions through the life and work of one of Western art’s most important painters, Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944). Kandinsky, who was the first Western artist to make the leap from figurative to abstract painting, was fearless in his aesthetic choices. His life, which was repeatedly thrown into chaos by the upheavals of the twentieth century, reflects his art as a study in perseverance, experimentation, and a willingness to abandon certainty. This talk will look at:

  • Why Kandinsky’s art is so important to the development of Western painting
  • How Kandinsky overcame fear and uncertainty to maintain focus, creative flexibility, and faith in his artistic ability
  • Understanding how we develop cognitive agility
  • Overcoming learned helplessness but not falling into the toxic positivity trap
  • Some basic strategies to cope with change
