Meeting housing targets and driving growth can often mean drastically altering the character of an existing place. Across Kent and Medway, intense town centre development and large urban extensions are bringing new life to towns and villages. However, this scale of change can be disruptive to local character and be challenging for communities.

This online masterclass will explore the concept of local character, how new development can reflect it and when it is appropriate to have a break in character. Learn from case studies in Kent, Cambridge and London how to define and plan for local character, what planning tools are available and how design codes can secure local character. This masterclass will be useful for planners, architects, urban designers and elected members.

Speakers

Joanne Preston - Principal Urban Designer, Greater Cambridge Shared Planning
Matthias Wunderlich - Director, Urban Initiatives Studio
Caroline Dommett - Senior Associate, BPTW
