JGSGB Specialist Talk: “Hobart Synagogue Digital Archive” by Jeff Schneider
The history of Hobart's tiny Jewish community is long and remarkable. It is a curious story of survival that is reflected in the Hobart Synagogue, Australia’s oldest synagogue still in use (1845). We will explore the stories found in the synagogue's online collection, which feature a variety of digitised documents that date back to 1838. There will be a special emphasis on the British roots of the congregation and how these connections were still a significant part of Tasmania's Jewish community identity well into the 20th century.
