Fall into nature with Plantlife: Farming for nature -The story of Juniper conservation in a Wiltshire landscape
Juniper dates back 10,000 years and was one of the first tree species to colonise the UK after the last Ice Age. Formerly common in Britain, populations have declined or disappeared due to overgrazing and undergrazing of Juniper habitat. This year Plantlife has been working with farmers across the Wylye Valley in Wiltshire to create better habitats for Juniper. We will wander through the Wiltshire Countryside to see how, by working together, Juniper will become a more familiar sight in our landscape.
Speakers:
Matt Pitts is Plantlife’s Meadows adviser, supporting a wide
range of landowners up and down the UK. Matt is a third-generation
farmers son. He spent his formative years working on mixed farms in Kent
and Sussex. Matt's career in practical conservation started in his mid-twenties
within the Kent County Countryside Management Service. He then worked
for 15 years as a land management adviser within the High Weald Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty. Matt joined Plantlife in 2019 and is
currently overseeing the delivery of a landscape scale juniper restoration
project in Wilshire and Oxfordshire.
