Rainforests across the UK are an internationally important habitat for plants that we may not notice. But what is so special about this habitat, why is it under threat and why should we protect these plants? In this session you will find out more about temperate rainforest and what makes it such a great place for lichens, bryophytes (mosses and liverworts) and ferns to grow. You will meet some of the iconic rainforest species and take away with you some tips for identifying these plants yourself.

Speakers:

Dr Alison Smith loves all thing woodland. Her doctorate is in forest ecology and what she can’t tell you about a liverwort frankly isn’t worth knowing. Alison is Plantlife’s Lead Community Scientist (job share) and spends her time developing skills in others so that they can work alongside her to save our rainforests.

Kate Hind has immersed herself in the world of bryophytes since joining Plantlife as Lead Community Scientist (job share). Kate’s passion’s lie in giving others the confidence to not just explore the more obscure plants that live in our rainforests, but share their knowledge with others too.

Rachel Jones has a passion for helping people to take their first steps in identification. Over the past 10 years at Plantlife she has supported hundreds of people to find a way in to lichen and fern identification in particular.

Plantlife relies on its members and donors. This event is free but if you would like to donate to support our work you can add an optional donation. The more you give, the more plants we can save. Thank you.
