Ffridd: Managing a mosaic of upland fringe habitats
Ffridd or coedcae, as it is known in south Wales is a habitat found on the boundary between the enclosed lowland and open uplands. It is a cultural landscape created by changing patterns of agricultural management over hundreds of years. Ffridd/ coedcae is typically a mosaic of habitats which may include grassland, heathland, mire, flush and woodland. The location on the upland fringe and nature of the varied habitat mosaic makes fridd/ coedcae particularly rich in species including birds, butterflies and grassland fungi.
This workshop will focus on how to manage the dynamic mosaic of habitats which form the distinctive transition between enclosed farmland of Cwmberach Uchaf and the open uplands of Mynydd Du in the Brecon Beacons National Park. We will look at the excellent work that the landowners and INCC have been doing to enhance the coedcae for pied flycatcher and marsh fritillary butterflies amongst other species who use this mosaic of habitats
We will discuss grazing patterns, livestock types and how to create a balance between open and wooded habitats within the mosaic.

Cynefin a saif ar y ffin rhwng yr iseldir amgaeëdig a’r ucheldir agored yw ffridd, neu goedcae fel y’i gelwir yn ne Cymru. Tirlun diwylliannol yw hwn a grëwyd gan batrymau newidiol o reolaeth amaethyddol dros gannoedd o flynyddoedd. Yn nodweddiadol o’r ffridd/coedcae mae clytwaith o gynefinoedd a all gynnwys gwelltir, rhostir, mignen, gwlyptir a choedlan. Oherwydd ei leoliad ar gwr yr ucheldir a natur y clytwaith o gynefinoedd amrywiol mae’r ffridd/coedcae yn cynnal cyfoeth o rywogaethau yn cynnwys adar, gloÿnnod byw a ffwng gwelltir.
Bydd y gweithdy’n canolbwyntio ar sut i reoli’r clytwaith deinamig o gynefinoedd sy’n ffurfio’r newid amlwg rhwng ffermdir amgaeëdig Cwmberach Uchaf ac ucheldir agored Mynydd Du ym Mharc Cenedlaethol Bannau Brycheiniog. Byddwn yn edrych ar y gwaith ardderchog y mae tirfeddianwyr a’r INCC wedi ei wneud i wella’r coedcae ar gyfer y gwybedog brith a’r glöyn byw britheg y gors, ymysg rhywogaethau eraill sy’n defnyddio’r clytwaith hwn o gynefinoedd.
Byddwn yn trafod patrymau pori, mathau o dda byw a sut i greu cydbwysedd rhwng cynefinoedd agored a choediog o fewn y clytwaith.
