Following on from We Are Nature, this workshop will explore the interlinking of nature and people through different aspects of making, looking, being, writing & drawing. At the end of the workshop participants will be encouraged to share their creative response to create an image of a magnificent road verge / meadow.

Caroline Dear will gather verge related words from the participants in response to conversation and poetry about road verges. She will also try and compose a poem live from the words gathered.

Nessie Ramm will talk about the process of painting on metal road signs, roadside rubbish & how nature gently reclaims places and things that we don’t value. She will do a digital studio tour and demonstrate the process of working on metal road signs.

Anne-Mie will use an explorative drawing exercise to create an open and free ‘in the zone’ atmosphere to draw, create and make, a similar experience as while being in nature (being with nature, being nature).

Speakers:
My art work draws inspiration from plants, evolutionary biology and science. I consider human impact, past and present, on our natural environment’. I explore art as a possible tool to instigate social and environmental change. Past projects and exhibitions include Coventry Biennial, ArcadeCampfa (Cardiff), Silent Stage (Lithuania), G39 (Cardiff, with Roger Lougher), Oriel Myrddin (Carmarthen), Oriel Davies (Newtown), the Jerwood Space (London), Lokaal01 (Antwerp, Belgium) and the Weizzmann Institute of Science (Israel).

Influenced by botany, archaeology, traditional skills and cultural stories I make work which explores our changing relationship with the natural world around us examining the link between our inner selves and the outer physical landscape. I have recently received an MA in Art and Social Practice from UHI. Projects/exhibitions include ‘Daughters of Penelope’ at Dovecot, Edinburgh, ‘A layered land’ Timespan, Helmsdale, ‘flora’ Oriel Davies, Wales, ‘Naked craft’, Canada , ‘Vassen susar’, Finland, with residencies in Norway, Denmark and Finland.

Nessie Ramm [email protected]

Nessie Ramm is on a mission to paint the road verges of Britain in exquisite botanical detail onto metal road signs; to render visible the beauty of these unloved wild spaces.

As this is online you will need to provide your own materials, you will need: recycled cardboard (like from a cereal box); regular drawing paper (A4 size is fine), pencil and/or writing pen, a black marker, scissors, glue stick, masking tape and any other material that you would like to work with (coloured pencils, pastel, charcoal). If there is a specific art material you like do have it ready to use. There will be real meadow and road verge specimens to see during the workshop. You can collect your own plant specimen to use during the workshop from your local neighbourhood if you like.

Plantlife relies on its members and donors. This event is free but if you would like to donate to support our work you can add an optional donation. The more you give, the more plants we can save. Thank you.
