It may be Autumn and grass flowers may seem like a memory, but before long we will be letting the lawns grow long. In amongst the wildflowers popping up we will see swaying grasses. Heads will be scratched over which grass is which. How about we take this time to pause and reflect over how we can get to know our grass species. Let us break it down and simplify how we can identify grass species. What are all the funny words in the book that are used to describe grasses and their parts? We can look at getting our head around this group of plants that are often described as tricky or best avoided. Let us find out what grasses can tell us about the state of the habitat and what makes them special.

Speakers:

Sarah Shuttleworth

A life long naturalist with a particular interest in plants and moths. Sarah studied Zoology in London, which included a research project in the jungles of Indonesia. After graduating Sarah then travelled from Island to Island around the UK working or volunteering, including living in a lighthouse on Bardsey, eradicating rats on Canna and putting up fences on the Scilly Isles. After a couple of years at the RSPB, Sarah then began her adventure with plants, working for 13 years at Warwickshire Wildlife Trust as a botanical surveyor. Now running the National Plant Monitoring Scheme, she still gets to work with plants and enthuse others about their significance and wonder.

Plantlife relies on its members and donors. This event is free but if you would like to donate to support our work you can add an optional donation. The more you give, the more plants we can save. Thank you.
