Want to save time in your game development by testing your ideas? Join this 2-hour workshop with industry veteran Stu Maine and paper prototype your game.

'Paper' prototyping is a key skill for developers because it's the fastest way of changing 'I think' into 'I know'. Ideas are great but they're fluffy and hard to communicate, so studios use paper prototyping to turn ideas into concrete designs that everyone can look at.

The session covers:

  • What you can paper prototype and why you might want to.
  • Using prototypes to answer the right questions.
  • Prototyping core gameplay, high-level decisions and more.
  • Using prototypes to help mesh narrative with the unique challenges and opportunities of interactive games.
  • The process, tools, techniques, and potential pitfalls, all backed up with examples from shipped games.

About your workshop leader:

Stu has worked in game design and narrative across console, PC and mobile platforms for 30 years, and was one of the founders of Well Played Games.Stu has worked with a wide range of IPs (Transformers, Angry Birds, Warhammer, SpongeBob Squarepants, etc) and on original titles, so is well placed to help bridge the gap between developers who understand how games are made and stakeholders who might not.His first video game history book, I’m Too Young To Die: The Ultimate Guide to First-Person Shooters 1992 – 2002, was released by Bitmap Books in 2022, and was followed by a sequel plus Designing Video Games (published by Pen and Sword Books) in 2025.
