Angelica Kauffman
at the Royal Academy
until 30 June
It was reported in the 18th Century that 'the whole world is Angelicamad', and yet nowadays most people have never heard of the person once described as 'the most cultivated woman in Europe'.
Born in Switzerland to an artist and opera singer, she was acclaimed as a prodigy, and led a nomadic childhood. In Rome she painted the portraits of 'Grand Tourists', and these contacts led to her head to London. Her arrival was met with almost instant success - best exemplified by her position as one of the two women who were founder members of the Royal Academy.
This exhibition was originally scheduled for 2020, but was cancelled - not postponed - as a result of the pandemic. However, all was not lost: it is finally here, and provides the perfect opportunity to re-assess the career of this remarkable artist, following her progress from Switzerland, via Italy to England, and then beyond Rome, where she ended her life as a hub in the cultural life of the Eternal City.
Please remember, I do not record my talks.
