Seeing and Feeling: Edvard Munch
Exhibitions at The Courtauld Gallery are always worth seeing - they are small and focussed, allowing you to look at the work properly and take time to see all of the exhibits. Edvard Munch, Masterpieces from Bergen, on show until 4 September, is no exception. Drawn from the private collection of Norwegian industrialist Rasmus Meyer, one of Munch's earliest and most important patrons, it maps the career of this idiosyncratic artist as his work grew from its Impressionist-inspired origins to ground-breaking originality at the very birth of the Expressionist movement. The first in my 'scattered' series, Looking in Different Ways, this talk will draw on the paintings in the exhibition to explore Munch's life and career while assessing what was truly different about his way of looking.
Please note: for various reasons I do not record my talks.
