Vincent, speaking for himself... Vincent van Gogh: Poets and Lovers
at the National Gallery, London
14 September '24 - 19 January '25
As part of its 200th Anniversary, the National Gallery has decided to mount a real crowd pleaser, an exhibition of the work of Vincent van Gogh which it is promising will be a 'once-in-a-century' exhibition. While I confess I am wary of yet another display of this kind, whenever my cynicism kicks in I usually find that I am completely wrong - and looking afresh always reveals new insights, and a greater realisation - with van Gogh in particular - that although not every painting was a masterpiece, those that were (and they are in the majority) are truly remarkable.
As yet, I'm not sure what we will see - apart from the great classics from the National Gallery, The Sunflowers and Van Gogh's Chair, which will be joined by their spiritual home The Yellow House. Whatever else will be included, I am certain that the exhibition itself will be far better than the purple prose that the Gallery has published on its website. I would prefer to let the paintings speak for themselves - let's see what happens!
Please remember, I do not record my talks.
