Michelangelo: the last decades

at the British Museum

until 28 July

Michelangelo left Florence in 1534 to carry out a commission for Pope Paul III: to paint the Last Judgement on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel. Although he wouldn't have known it at the time, he was never to return, and he died in the Eternal City three decades later.

The British Museum's exhibition - inspired by the recently completed conservation of their monumental (if misnamed) cartoon Epifania - charts the master's life and work during this final, vital phase of his career.

Rather than cutting back his productivity, his output flourished, as he met new people who would inspire him, collaborated with others to communicate is ideas more widely, became an architect and wrote poetry.

The exhibition is beautifully designed with great clarity, with each section flowing seamlessly into the next, and each space appropriate for the work that is exhibited. As usual, I will lead a virtual tour through the exhibition to provide an introduction for those yet to go, a recap for those who have, or a hint of the treasures on display for those who won't be able to get there.

Please remember, I do not record my talks.
