The Bayeux Tapestry
...in the British Museum and in Context

There is so much to look at in the Bayeux Tapestry that I will be spending two weeks just going from one end to the other - without really having the time to explain who everyone is, and what is going on - let alone questions like who made it, who did they make it for, and why was it made. So that's what this third talk is about.

We will discover the relevance of the other exhibits displayed at the British Museum (though as I type I still don't know what they are), and will explore the relationships between the different characters who are depicted. There are many different opinions about the patronage of the work, and we will consider the different possibilities.  The sources for  the design seem relatively clear, though, and we will look at some of those, and we will also weigh up the possible answers for some of the most pressing questions. Who was Aelfgyva? And which one is Harold?  

Although it would help to have seen the first two talks, this will still be relevant to those who haven't, as an introduction to the history and the design of the 'tapestry', even if not its full appearance.
