Vermeer: On Reflection

The exhibition Vermeer: On Reflection, at Dresden's Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Master Painting Gallery) is one of the many across the world that has been postponed and postponed, but is now finally open, and will be until the 2nd of January next year. Together with about a quarter of Vermeer's surviving works (i.e. nine -more than originally planned), it will include works by those of his Dutch contemporaries who were interested in the same themes, with an especial focus on the recent discoveries concerning Dresden's own painting, which is being exhibited in public for the first time since a controversial restoration which revealed a painting hanging on the back wall which had been painted over, and hadn't been seem for centuries. The talk will discuss this particular painting in detail, and explain the motivation behind the restoration, as well as giving an overview of the exhibition as a whole.
