Yoko Ono

Music of the Mind
at Tate Modern until 1 September

Even now, a quarter of the way into the 21st century, Yoko Ono is known to most members of the public as the partner of Beatle John Lennon, and to many fans of the Fab Four she is still the odd, eccentric or even 'crazy' woman who took him away from the group. However, she has been a constant presence in the contemporary art world, and it is hard to overestimate her importance for the development and continued practice of conceptual art from the 1960s until today.

The exhibition currently on show at Tate Modern is the largest to date, starting with her trailblazing early works, exploring its poetry, simplicity and humour. The integrity of her practice is paramount, as is her heartfelt belief in humanity's ability to act well, to create, and to be constructive in the face of the potential evils of the modern world. Above all she asks her audience to be present, to be mindful, and to acknowledge what is - or should be - important in our lives.

We will look at her work in detail, and consider her relationship to some of the other ground-breaking figures of post-war modernism, such as John Cage and Samuel Beckett.

Please remember, I do not record my talks.
