Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti

Following on from the previous week's discussion of Duccio and the Virgin Mary, we will look in detail at the paintings which the brothers Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti painted to go near the Maestà in Siena cathedral, before looking further afield to other paintings - and in particular, those which are less often seen.

If anything, we will spend more time with Ambrogio, looking at his work for the Abbey of San Galgano in the countryside beyond Siena, and then further still, to see the Maestà he painted for Massa Marittima. But we will also look closer to home, with the brothers' frescoes for San Francesco in Siena, not to mention Ambrogio's masterpiece, The Allegory of Good and Bad Judgement in the Palazzo Pubblico, which it would be almost criminal to ignore!
