Women Looking: Reframed at Dulwich Picture Gallery
According to the Observer, the current exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery, Reframed: The Woman in the Window (until 4 September) is 'Enthralling, imaginative and constantly surprising,' as well as being 'filled with revelations.' Other reviews are equally enthusiastic, and they are right to be so. It includes a wonderfully astute selection of works, and is constantly challenging and thought provoking.
As a 'Different way of looking' this thematic exhibition takes Rembrandt's 'Girl at a Window' as its starting point, and spins an intriguing web of connections around the genre of 'The Woman in the Window' both past and present, looking as far back as the 9th Century BCE and up to the present day.
In this talk we will examine the different implications of the images - containment, control or at times, even, empowerment - as well as discovering the implications of seeing and being seen, with images varying from voyeurism to display. There is a wealth of imagery, and alongside Rembrandt we will also see works by Botticelli, Bouts, Rossetti, Degas, Picasso and Hockney - among many more.
Please remember, I do not record my talks...
