The Piero Trail
For many people, Piero della Francesca remains the epitome of Early Renaissance art: highly idealised, serene, perfectly proportioned, the figures in harmony with their setting. While there are examples scattered in museums around the world, the best places to see these transcendent paintings are the locations for which they were made - in central Italy.
The Piero Trail is effectively an artistic pilgrimage around central Italy to see all the paintings by the master which are accessible. There are many ways to do this, and different locations which can be visited, but our virtual journey will start in Sansepolcro, where Piero was born, and where he died. From there, our exploration of his works will be geographical rather than chronological.
From Sansepolcro we will head on to Arezzo, Perugia and Urbino, among other locations, before ending in Rimini. This would be my suggested route for any of you who would like to make this pilgrimage under your own steam: the masterpieces in Florence and Milan will have to wait for another time... The talk could also be an introduction for those who may already be planning to go (I will be taking groups in October and March), or a chance to enjoy the art for those who would prefer not to spend so much time on the road (and there is quite a lot of ground to be covered).
Please remember, I do not record my talks.
