Sculpture 4: Memory - Something to remember

This, the last talk in our series about Sculpture will focus on one particular genre - the sculptural portrait. Not only does this serve to preserve the image of the sitter in the same way as a painted portrait, but there is also a very specific genre of sculpture, which barely exists in painting: the tomb monument. We will look at the great portraitists across history, in a wide range of different formats, materials, and styles, thus drawing all the different strands of this series together. Inevitably Bernini was one of the greatest, but we will also look at the wonderful French sculptor who flourished in England in the 18th Century, Louis-François Roubiliac, whose monument to Handel is illustrated above... not to mention works by Donatello, Verrocchio, Niccolò dell'Arca and Michelangelo, bringing all of our heroes together - as well as introducing some more.

Please remember, I never record my talks!
