2. The Stuarts
Monday, 9 October
With the death of Elizabeth I, the throne passed to King James VI of Scotland, who became, simultaneously, King James I of England. The Stuart Dynasty continued until the death of Queen Anne in 1714, after a civil war, the beheading of Charles I, the Commonwealth, the Restoration of the Monarchy, the Glorious Revolution (or was it a Dutch invasion?) and the Act of Union, which, after the 'personal union' embodied by James, finally brought about the creation of the United Kingdom.
While we will obviously be covering the political implications of these events, our focus will of course be on looking at some of the great paintings - and increasingly sculptures - of this remarkable century-or-so of British History, and considering the impact of artists from elsewhere, such as Anthony van Dyck (Flemish), Daniel Mytens (Dutch) and Michael Dahl (Swedish).
Please remember, I do not record my talks.
