250 Years of Challenging Perception 

at Dovecot Studios, Edinburgh until 6 January 2024 

I will end my 'somewhat Scottish September' by talking about a wonderfully rich exhibition organised as a collaboration between Dovecot Studios and the Fleming Collection. The former, established in 1912, describes itself as 'a world-renowned tapestry studio in the heart of Edinburgh and a landmark centre for contemporary art, craft and design', while the latter aims to 'further an understanding and awareness of Scottish art and creativity through exhibitions, events, publishing and education', and is considered 'the finest collection of Scottish art outside public institutions comprising over 600 works from the seventeenth century to the present day.' 

With Dovecot studios providing the venue, the exhibition includes a number of the tapestries and rugs woven and tufted on the premises to the designs of modern and contemporary Scottish women, acting as a counterpoint to the paintings and sculptures selected from the bountiful resources of the Fleming Collection. These are hung thematically to consider the ways in which women challenged the male dominated art world, introducing us to 'firsts' in terms of recognition and achievement, and to the various communities of artists which provided invaluable training, promotion and support. A exploration of what it means to be 'Scottish' as an artist, leads on to a section in which the artists look further afield to find recognition and inspiration. Finally the artists look both inwards - both 'indoors' and into their own private inner worlds, and out, celebrating the beauty and wildness of the varied Scottish landscape. 

Initially staged for the Edinburgh International Festival this display will be on view until the beginning of next year. The will consider each of the themes, drawing together the most important ideas and the best of the art represented.
