Theatre Picasso

at Tate Modern
until 12 April 2026

Throughout his life Pablo Picasso was excited, enthralled and influenced by performers and performances of all types, and in many ways his own career can be seen as another of these bravura displays - creating and maintaining a persona as an outsider and visionary, telling stories in the most dramatic way imaginable through any appropriate medium - painting, drawing, sculpture and even textiles.

This ground-breaking exhibition celebrates the centenary of the painting 'The Three Dancers', which just happens to be one of my favourites - probably because of its rich in symbolism and significant place in his career. It has been brilliantly reviewed, The Independent describing it as 'A wonderfully atmospheric and revealing deep dive into Picasso's world'.

The drama of this modern master's work is reflected in an exhibition which Tate describes as having been 'staged' - by contemporary artist Wu Tsang and curator Enrique Fuenteblanca: it certainly provides a unique opportunity to experience the work in a new and exciting way.
