The Works on Paper
Part 1: A restless spirit - Michelangelo's drawings and poetry
Part 2: Case Study - The collaboration with Sebastiano
Michelangelo's skill as a draughtsman was second to none - although it's a close run thing seeing as he was a contemporary of both Leonardo and Raphael, and like them he created a multitude of drawings in preparation for his other work - but also as works of art in their own right. So this is where I fall down: there is no hope of looking at them all, especially as I want to think about his other works 'on paper' - his poetry, the element of his creativity which is perhaps least considered.
Like the previous weeks, part 2 will be given over to a case study, looking at his collaboration with Sebastiano del Piombo, much of which was carried out via drawings and by correspondence. Inspired by the National Gallery's fantastic exhibition, this will be the perfect opportunity to revisit the subject after five years of contemplation!
Please remember, I do not record my talks.
