Turner & Constable

Rivals & Originals
at Tate Britain
27 November 2025 - 12 April 2026

250 years since the birth of two of Britain’s greatest artists, Turner and Constable, Tate has brought together an exhibition exploring the lives and legacies of these two infamous rivals. Born within a year of each other, Turner and Constable vied to use landscape as a means to reflect the changing world around them.

Raised in separate worlds – Turner born humbly into the heart of gritty Georgian London while Constable was the son of a wealthy merchant – both were determined to forge their paths as artists. Despite their different upbringings, both had a profound connection to nature.

The exhibition encourages audiences to discover the unexpected sides to both these two leaders in their field, chronicling their careers through the intimate insights of sketchbooks and personal items, along with powerful and dynamic paintings and expressive sketches shown together side by side.

As so often, in this talk we will take a virtual stroll through the gallery to introduce the exhibition's major paintings and themes in preparation for a future visit, as a reminder of what you might have already seen, or to make up for being unable to enjoy it in person.

Please remember, I do not record my talks.
