Van Gogh was one of many artists working in France at the end of the 19th century, but unlike many of his peers, his work has only increased in popularity since then. From immersive exhibitions to biopics to mountains of merchandise, the Van Gogh industry shows no signs of slowing down. But the tragedy of his life story isn't enough to explain why van Gogh continues to hold such fascination over modern audiences. What is it about the actual art - which sometimes gets overlooked in the recycling of his biography - that keeps us coming back for more?

To coincide with the National Gallery's exhibition "Poets and Lovers" (opening September 14th), this live Zoom talk will look closely both at the artist's work and its afterlife in the 20th and 21st centuries to answer - or attempt to answer - this question.
